Evolution of social economy companies in Andalusia (2007-2016) and the differential fact of Almeria

Abstract

Social economy is fundamental within the economic development of Andalusia, which is the first Autonomous Community of Spain according to the number of this type of entities. It contributes almost 14% of the GDP in Andalusia, as well as it is present in all economic sectors and in more than 82% of the Andalusian municipalities. It is an important actor of local development, by exploiting the endogenous resources of the territory, since it ties the population to their places of origin, acts where need arises, and generates economic activity where it did not exist before. This research paper aims to answer three key questions: How have Andalusian social entities and companies evolved, with special attention to pre- and post-crisis data? Are social economy companies stronger in times of crisis? Is Almeria a unique case in Andalusia in relation to this type of entity?
