Radio Messaging for Irrigation System Management in Rural Communities of Indigenous People in Ecuador

Abstract

<p>This paper analyzes the participation of the Andean Quechua communities of Olmedo and Ayora, canton of Cayambe, Ecuador, in a communication project aimed at using community radios for irrigation activities from 1990 to 2015. Through action research approach, we examine the management of knowledge on this issue and demonstrate the citizens’ participation by submitting solutions to the water issue. Results show how radio programs are a reference to the bi-univocal relationship between knowledge and action, by transmitting the technical development among indigenous communities of the micro-basin of La Chimba River, which in this case optimizes the existing water flows and increases the valuation of agricultural production with activities that have improved family incomes through the milk chain.</p>
