Migration of Mexican Talent: Myths and Realities

Abstract

This research presents the preliminary results of a survey applied through a digital platform to 660 highly qualified Mexican migrants working in different countries. One of the objectives was to document the forms of labor insertion in the destination countries to confirm a generalized idea in the specialized literature, which suggests that qualified Mexicans are being under-utilized or over-employed in the destination labor markets. Several aspects were analyzed, such as level of studies, language proficiency, place of obtaining degrees, possible forms of discrimination, and access to labor rights, among others, associated with the success or failure of their professional life. The results indicate some myths related to skilled Mexican migration when their low labor market insertion or lack of access to labor rights is pointed out.
